The Olney Boys Club was established in 1969 and in 1971 changed its name to the Olney Boys and Girls Club (OBGC) to better characterize the mission of the organization and its members. Over the years, OBGC has provided extracurricular sports for an estimated 45,000 children in the Olney area and currently has nearly 7,000 children that play sports for the Club annually. The ages of our members range from 5 to 18 years old and who play numerous sports including: baseball, soccer, football, baseball, softball, T-ball, wrestling, cheerleading, basketball, field hockey and lacrosse at various skill levels.
OBGC is governed by the Mission of the organization and a Board of Directors that oversees all of the Club’s activities and gives strategic direction to its growth, use and financial stability. The organizational structure of the Club is designed to capture both board and non-board members input through the use of several committees that are charged with specific responsibilities to maintain the expertise needed to solve the day-to-day issues the Club. The Committees include: Executive, Budget and Finance, Technology, Risk Management, Events, Facilities and Sports Effectiveness and are open to all that have a sincere interest in giving back to the children in the community.
OBGC is run and managed by an all-volunteer Board of Directors and group of sport commissioners and has two full-time and three part-time paid employees that help with registration and the administration of the club. We estimate that we have 800 volunteer coaches annually and the entire organization is based on giving back to the community by giving time to help address numerous club tasks. Without volunteers, we would not have OBGC or our facility.
OBGC’s volunteer spirit is driven by parents, relatives, neighbors and other interested community leaders who give freely of their time to provide a family-oriented and wholesome experience to our children, understanding that today’s children will soon be our next generation of local citizens and club volunteers. The effort to build the club, its programs and the park, is all led by volunteers.
