Boys Program

OBGC Boys Lacrosse

Fall 2010
We are looking for coaching volunteers to help with Fall Lacrosse at OGBC.  This will be a Sunday only program with no practice during the week.  Ideally a minimum of two coaches for each age group U15, U13, U11 and U9.  The plan is to have kids play at the level they will play in the coming spring season.  For example if a player was a U13 this past spring but will play U15 next spring that player will be a U15 (Junior) in the Fall.

Players are expected to provide all their own boys lacrosse equipment.

We expect to run an hour and a half for each age group with 45 minutes of instruction and drills followed by 45 minutes of game.   We will use this time to continue to focus on skill development as well as having fun playing.

Fall season begins Sunday, September 12 and ends October 24.

*The Scoopers program introduces the players to the fastest growing sport in the United States. The Scoopers curriculum is based on learning through play. Fundamentals of the game are taught in a safe, fun filled environment.  This “no contact” introduction to the game requires players to have only a lax stick -- not the full gear required for the older groups.

Note from the Soccer Commissioner to Scooper Parents,

I wanted to remind you know that the Scooper Lacrosse Program will start this coming Saturday April 10th at OBGC Park.  The sessions will run from 8:00 AM – 9:00 AM each Saturday.  If there are home games at the park we will use the lower lacrosse field (near the field of screams) otherwise we will use the football field.

If your son already has a stick please bring it, if not we will provide sticks.   No other equipment is necessary other then a mouth guard.

Location:  OBGC Park at Freeman Fields - 4501 Olney-Laytonsville Rd, Olney MD 20832.  Approximately 1.5 miles west of the intersection of Route 97 (Georgia Avenue) and Route 108 (Olney Laytonsville Rd)

OBGC 2010 Lacrosse Program

OBGC is playing in the Southern Maryland Youth Lacrosse Organization (SMYLA).  We are excited to be participating in the competitive Northern Conference of SMYLA.  We will have both home and away games against Montgomery Village, Rockville, Silver Spring, Damascus, Urbana, Linganore, and Bowie as well as additional non-division games.  The season will consist of 10 league games with at least half of those games played at Freeman Fields in Olney.  For more information on SMYLA please visit the SMYLA web site at www.smyla.org

Important Addition to the Spring 2010 Program.  Our registration continues to grow every year, which results in multiple B teams at each age group.  In an effort to provide the best learning and playing environment for our B teams, OGBC has made arrangements with Bethesda Lacrosse Club to have our B teams participate in their Bethesda Orange League.  Similar to SMYLA, these B teams will have both home games at Freeman Fields and away games at Bethesda and/or Potomac field locations. We believe this arrangement provides greater opportunity for the players to learn and develop lacrosse skills.  This accommodation is being made in response to parental requests to have players grouped with similar skills rather than combining new lax players with experienced lax players.

Grading/Tryouts:  If more than one team is formed in the Junior, Midget or Peewee age groups, OBGC coaches will determine which players will play on the SMYLA “A” and B" teams based grading conducted during tryouts.  Weather permitting; we intend to have our first group practice/tryout on Saturday February 27th.  Information regarding times and location will be communicated via email and updated on the website.  Please be sure to include your correct email address on your registration form.

Equipment and Uniforms: OBGC provides uniforms and specialized goalie gear. All other personal equipment is the responsibility of the player.  Boys require helmet, shoulder and arm pads, groin protection, gloves, lacrosse stick, mouth-guard and field shoes. Rib pads are strongly recommended.   Please arrive at the first practice with all of your equipment.

Note…one change this season the coaches will be collecting the jersey at the end of the season for reuse.  We believe the jerseys are not worn after the season, and that the savings will benefit the club by helping to cover rising field and ref expenses.   We will collect a small deposit check that will not be cashed and will be returned as the jerseys are handed in.

Practices: Practices will be held 2-3 times a week.  Practice fields and times will be determined once the permitting process has been completed.  Additional practices may be held during weekend periods.  Please bring water to every practice and be sure to take your trash with you when you leave.

Games:  A complete game schedule will be provided as soon as possible. Our first games will be played on Saturday, March 20, 2010.  Games will be played on either Saturdays or Sundays, with some games played on both days on many weekends.  Several mid-week games will likely be played as well.  Regular season games conclude before the Memorial Day weekend.  The annual SMLYA tournament will be on Saturday and Sunday, May 22nd and 23rd.
