OBGC is pleased to announce that on
November 30 in Baltimore, OBGC's all-volunteer Board of Directors
and Staff was awarded the "Seal of Excellence" by the Nonprofits
Standards of Excellence Institute and Maryland Nonprofits.
OBGC is the first sports organization in
the Country to have met this standards of nonprofit management.
To date, only 53 out of approximately 20,000 nonprofits
in the State of
The actual Seal of Excellence is defined
by the Institute as a symbol of Trust, Excellence in Leadership
and Openness, Excellence in Nonprofit Management, and Disclosure
in Nonprofits. The public sees this
seal as a reminder that OBGC is being run at the highest levels
of nonprofit management, financial practice and governance.
OBGC is committed to taking a hard look at who we are
and how we can improve each year for the benefit of children.
In an approach similar to how we built
the $6.9MM children’s facility which is considered one of
the best in the country, and the innovative business plans
that maintain the Club at the highest levels of benefit for
children without financially burdening members, the Board
set a goal of achieving management excellence for kids that
will help guarantee similar benefits for future generations.
The Board’s hope is that children will be inspired
by the work that over 800 volunteers (at OBGC) do each year
on their behalf and will aspire to be productive citizens
and volunteers in their own communities as they grow older.
Other Significant Board Accomplishments:
1.
Purchased a 118 acre farm for $650,000 from Ken Warfield
in 1998 to build the facility outlined above.
The facility was needed to help put an end to the pressure
OBGC was under to turn kids away from sports due to the lack
of appropriate fields as the organization doubled in size
over the past 6 years. OBGC is still forced
to turn kids away from basketball due to a lack of gym space.
OBGC plans to build a gym once funds are available.
2.
Reorganized the Board and club committee functions
to better prepare itself for the future and: expand its sports
offering for girls and kids; ensure an inclusive and collegial
volunteer environment and decision making process; improve
financial stability through innovation while not burdening
the membership; create a safer and more nurturing environment
for kids to play in.
3.
Developed an innovative business plan that alleviates
financial stress from its members by offering scholarships
or using community/family event-based fundraisers that pull
families together, extensive camp programs and concessions.
The majority of club expenses are not paid for by the
parents so the value they get for what they spend is two fold.
For every dollar a parent pays into the club, the club
pays out two dollars for their child’s benefit. Members
pay the costs associated with the sports they play and the
cost of administering the club.
4.
Launched a comprehensive website that allows easy registration
and provides information about sports, the Club and facilities
online.
5.
Developed and implemented a mandatory adult background
check registration system to help protect kids.
The system is called "Kidsafe" and requires all coaches,
assistant coaches, staff and Board members to register each
season in an attempt to better protect our kids.
6.
Developed and implemented an expanded NYSCA/skill and
health training program for all coaches. In
a joint-venture with NRH Regional Rehab and
7.
Developed and implemented a "Community Care Program"
where OBGC advertises other child-based nonprofits on the
t-shirts our kids wear, when their team doesn’t have a sponsor.
OBGC offer this free of charge to the child-based nonprofit
and the greater community of children benefit.
8.
Developed a joint-venture with
9.
Developed and implemented a comprehensive and confidential
post-season member survey program for all of our sports to
collect feedback and improve our programs for the benefit
of kids.
10.
Acquired the Olney Soccer Club in order to expand soccer
offering, improve the overall management and skills training
for soccer coaches so kids get better instruction and control
a soccer tournament for the benefit of the club.
11.
Developed and implemented an Automatic Exterior Defibrillator
(AED) program at the park to better protect our children,
parents and grandparents from the risks associated with sudden
cardiac death.
12.
Placed a registered healthcare provider on most weekends
at the park to assist with child and adult injuries and emergencies.
